Background of the Study:
Adequate water intake is essential for maintaining kidney function and overall health. In Yobe State, water consumption habits vary significantly due to factors such as climate, socioeconomic status, and cultural practices. Insufficient water intake can lead to dehydration, increased kidney workload, and the formation of kidney stones, while excessive intake may also disrupt electrolyte balance (Okeke, 2023). The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste and maintaining fluid balance; therefore, deviations from optimal water consumption can predispose individuals to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and other renal disorders. In Yobe State, where water scarcity and poor water quality are persistent issues, suboptimal hydration is a common concern. Additionally, traditional beliefs and a lack of awareness about the importance of hydration may contribute to inadequate water consumption among residents (Aminu, 2024).

Emerging research has linked chronic dehydration and improper water consumption patterns to long-term kidney damage and an increased incidence of renal disease. The burden of kidney disease not only affects individuals’ quality of life but also places significant strain on the healthcare system. Public health initiatives that promote proper hydration and educate communities about the risks of both under- and overhydration are critical for improving kidney health outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the impact of water consumption habits on kidney health in Yobe State by examining fluid intake patterns, kidney function indicators, and the prevalence of kidney-related disorders (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
In Yobe State, inadequate and improper water consumption habits contribute significantly to poor kidney health outcomes. Many residents, particularly in rural areas, do not consume sufficient water due to factors such as water scarcity, economic constraints, and limited awareness of the health benefits of adequate hydration (Umar, 2023). This inadequate water intake leads to chronic dehydration, which increases the risk of kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and long-term kidney damage. Conversely, some individuals may consume excessive water without proper guidance, potentially leading to electrolyte imbalances. The combined effects of these behaviors result in a high prevalence of kidney-related diseases, which are often diagnosed at advanced stages due to a lack of early screening. The inadequate promotion of optimal hydration practices and the scarcity of quality water sources exacerbate these issues. This study aims to assess the relationship between water consumption habits and kidney health in Yobe State, thereby providing evidence for targeted interventions that can improve hydration practices and reduce kidney disease incidence.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess water consumption patterns among residents of Yobe State.
  2. To evaluate the association between water intake and kidney health indicators.
  3. To recommend public health strategies to optimize hydration and prevent kidney disease.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the prevalent water consumption habits in Yobe State?
  2. How do these habits correlate with kidney health parameters?
  3. What interventions can promote optimal hydration practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Inadequate water intake is significantly associated with poor kidney function.
  2. H2: There is a correlation between water consumption patterns and the prevalence of kidney stones.
  3. H3: Public health interventions will improve hydration practices and kidney health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on rural and urban populations in Yobe State. Limitations include reliance on self-reported water intake and challenges in obtaining standardized kidney function measurements.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Water Consumption Habits: Patterns and quantities of water intake by individuals.
  • Kidney Health: The functional status of the kidneys, typically measured by biomarkers such as creatinine levels.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A long-term condition characterized by gradual loss of kidney function.
